Mandatory Reporting - What is mandatory reporting?

Mandatory reporting is the legislative requirement for selected classes of people to report suspected child abuse and neglect to government authorities. In NSW, mandatory reporting is regulated by the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998 (the Care Act).

It’s mandatory to make a report if the child is 0 to 15 years old and at risk of significant harm. It’s not compulsory to make a report if it is an unborn child or a young person aged 16 to 17. However, statements can be made under Section 24 or 25 of the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998.
